Kardiovaskuläre Komplikationen wie Herzinfarkt, Schlaganfall und Herzmuskelschwäche stellen die häufigsten Ursachen für Morbidität und Sterblichkeit in den westlichen Industrieländern dar. Die Reduktion kardiovaskulärer Risikofaktoren ist eine wesentliche Intervention, deren Nutzen zur Verminderung von Morbidität und Sterblichkeit belegt ist. So mancher Patient, der kardiovaskuläre Risikofaktoren aufweist oder sogar schon eine Komplikation wie Herzinfarkt oder Schlaganfall erlitten hat, beklagt sich häufig darüber, dass der Kardiologe „alles verbietet, was Spaß macht”. In den letzten Jahren haben zahlreiche epidemiologische Untersuchungen Hinweise darauf geliefert, dass Alkohol in geringen Mengen das koronare Risiko nicht verschlechert, sondern sogar günstig beeinflussen kann. Spekulationen über die Menge und die Art der zu konsumierenden Getränke haben eine ganze Reihe von wissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen stimuliert. Darüber hinaus sind die Mechanismen des protektiven Effektes eines moderaten Alkohol- und insbesondere auch Weingenusses Gegenstand aktuellster Untersuchungen.
